Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV)

What is Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV)?

As an independent installer NuTech Renewables have researched the market place, tested and have selected only the best quality heat recovery units available to ensure that the unit selected for your home is the correct size and design to ensure it works to its maximum performance. Finally we test the HRV system to ensure the house is completely balanced and that the system is running correctly.

This is a ventilation system that recovers heat that is normally lost through uncontrolled ventilation in a standard house. In an air-tight house the ventilation of the house is done in a controlled manner using a HRV system. Using a HRV system the recovered heat from the air expelled from the house is used to pre-heat the fresh incoming air. The HRV unit does NOT create heat; it only recovers it, and so all buildings require a primary heat source to be present within the house.

The greater the air tightness of the property, the more effective the HRV system is, as the possibility of recovering the heat energy within the property is improved by the higher level of air tightness. By recovering heat energy within the house and giving most of it back to the property the amount of work that is required by your main boiler is reduced and so your annual space heating costs are also reduced.

The benefits of installing an HRV system

There are numerous benefits to installing a Heat Recovery System in your home including:

  • Economy - Reduces home heating costs
  • Health - Clean fresh air benefits everybody
  • Comfort - Closed windows and draught free ventilation
  • Energy Efficiency - Collects heat from the air leaving the building
  • Condensation Control -  Continuous extraction from wet rooms
  • Security - Constantly locked windows means security

NuTech's Heat Recovery Ventilation systems are installed to the highest of standards and we adhere to Part F of the UK Building Regulations in relation to ventilation requirements for dwellings. NuTech carry out the installation and testing of the HRV system to, 'Part 7: Performance testing of a mechanical supply and exhaust ventilation units (including heat recovery) for mechanical ventilation systems intended for single family dwellings'. And work to relevant standards as set by the Good Practice Guide in relation to Part 268 – 'Energy Efficient Ventilation in Dwellings' from the Energy Savings Trust.

All the equipment we use and provide is the best available and is suitable for the purpose and sized according to calculation. Ductwork is sized to suit and is a mixture of rigid and flexible ductwork according to what is appropriate. The outlet heads are capable of general diffusion and adjustment for volumes. All ductwork is designed to minimise background noise. The filters within the heat recovery unit are cleanable.

Factors to Consider when installing Heat Recovery Ventilation

How is the HRV unit installed in my home?

The importance of a HRV system in a low energy designed house

If you are designing a low energy house a Heat Recovery ventilation System is essential. In order to meet building regulations regarding adequate ventilation requirements, some form of ventilation has to be implemented. In a low energy build high levels of insulation and airtightness will be incorporated. Using a traditional practice for ventilation, such as trickle vents, demeans the effort that has been put into the insulation and airtightness of the build, as it is essentially like putting a hole is the airtightness membrane. A HRV system as it is controlled and energy is being recovered from the outgoing stale air, ensures ventilation requirements are met but also upholds the airtightness membrane and the low energy ethos of the building.

The importance of low noise levels
H   HRV systems are designed to run 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Quite simply they have to be quiet in operation and acceptable to the occupants.  NuTech Renewables Ltd is renowned for supplying systems with very low noise levels. This is because we size and design every system we install, from the HRV unit through to the air valves.

Correct design and installation is essential
A ventilation system has to be designed and installed correctly to ensure maximum efficiency and adequate ventilation rates are delivered into the property for health reasons.
HRV systems are very often the most complicated type of ventilation system to design and install in a home. Unlike many other ventilation equipment manufacturers we offer a complete design and installation service throughout Ireland and the UK. Once the system is installed we also measure and test the airflow rates into and out of the dwelling.

Building Regulations and Energy Certification

We have a range of heat recovery ventilation units, which are used in a design depending on the house requirements, size and layout, so to ensure ventilation requirements are met for building regulations.
NuTech can also supply, ensuring there are no design restraints, a HRV unit that is Appendix Q rated. This is important if a high SAP or BER rating is important for the house owner or developer.

Warranty
The HRV units we supply come with various warranties, but all parts and labour have a one year guarantee.
