Solar energy is collected via solar panels, and this solar energy is used for either space heating, hot water, or stored in a solar hot water cylinder. At night when there is no hot water demand any stored solar energy is used to pre-warm the air in the building, reducing the heating demands. This system is controlled via the ires controller, which monitors the temperatures both inside and outside, and makes adjustments to the ventilation to ensure a comfortable working environment. The system will also optimise for the season i.e. in winter it can use solar energy from the solar panels (which is not warm enough to provide solar hot water, and use this to pre-warm the air via the ventilation system)In a normal solar hot water heating system this solar energy would be unusable. In the summer this solar energy will be diverted to the cylinder as the demand for warm air will be low.
